Research tabs stay open because each one might matter later. The fix isn't closing them sooner; it's making sure closing one never loses it.
Give reading its time
Long-haul research keeps Wikipedia, arXiv, Google Scholar, MDN and similar sites for a week unused before they move to Bin. Keep reference material does the same by kind of site instead of a list.
Never lose a source
Save before closing bookmarks each tab into a WithFew folder just before it closes. Your bookmarks become the record of everything you opened and moved on from.
Reminders instead of guilt
Just remind me moves nothing and sends a notification for each tab you haven't opened in three days, so you decide.
