How to group tabs automatically in Chrome

Tab groups are one of Chrome's best features, and one of its least used, because making them is work. Here's how to get the most from them by hand, and how to have them made for you.

Making groups by hand

  • New group: right-click a tab and choose Add tab to new group. Give it a short name and a colour.
  • Several tabs at once: hold Ctrl (Cmd on a Mac) and click tabs to select them, or Shift-click for a run of tabs, then right-click one of them and add them all to a group.
  • Move tabs in and out: drag a tab onto a group, or out of it.
  • Collapse: click a group's name. A collapsed group takes one slot in your tab strip.
  • Keep a group for later: recent versions of Chrome can save a group, so it can be closed and reopened later.

Ways of grouping that work

  • By task: "Trip to Lisbon", "Q3 report". The group closes when the task is done.
  • By kind: docs, email and chat, reading, shopping.
  • By time: today's tabs, and everything older, collapsed.

The catch is doing it every day, for every new tab. Most tab strips end up like this:

Having tabs grouped for you

  4. By time: whatever's left goes under Today and Earlier.

Groups you make yourself are left alone, and if you move a tab, WithFew doesn't move it back. Working out what kind of site a tab is happens on your device: nothing about your tabs is sent anywhere.
